Twenty-two years ago, the Red Help International launched campaigns for the liberation of Georges Abdallah, who was already in his 18th year of imprisonment.
We have never ceased to play our role in this struggle, just as Georges has never abandoned his resistance, never stopped embodying the fight against imperialism, the struggle for a free, democratic, secular, and socialist Palestine from the Mediterranean to the Jordan River.
The mobilization for Georges has gone through various phases, from times of isolation to the broadening of forces demanding his release—an expansion driven by the increasingly evident political nature of the relentless persecution against him.
The extension of his detention is one of the manifestations of the French state’s support for Israel, a colonial and genocidal state. The history of the FARL is precisely one of attacking this link between the complicit interests of imperialism and the crimes of Zionism. It is this dual heritage of the Arab revolutionary left and the international anti-imperialist struggle that the French state has sought to bury through decades of blackmail and coercion.
Solidarity campaigns for Georges have engaged several generations of activists, the latest of whom were not even born when Georges became eligible for release in 1999. These campaigns form a long history of solidarity, perseverance, and sometimes even weariness—something we must acknowledge.
The decision of the enforcement tribunal on November 15 to order Georges’ release as of December 6 highlighted the importance of the support campaign. The prosecution, of course, appealed, and the final decision is expected on February 20.
This is not the first time we have believed ourselves to be on the verge of victory.
We have not forgotten the maneuver by Manuel Valls, then Minister of the Interior from the Socialist Party in 2013, who, by refusing to sign Georges’ expulsion order, used an administrative sleight of hand to block the previous judicial decision granting his release.
For this reason, we are calling for a new wave of mobilization on February 19.
Against the crimes of imperialism and Zionism,
Today, more than ever,
Solidarity with Georges Abdallah!
